Automatically planning shifts in hospitals with Artificial Intelligence

The Story

Hospitals spend tremendous amounts of scarce management capacity to plan the working shifts of their employees. Month by month a manual and error-prone process is conducted in order to plan shifts for the coming months for various teams. It is a challenging and time-consuming task to find an optimised schedule that satisfies the needs of clients, employees and management. How do you consider day-specific wishes of individual employees? How do you prioritise wishes for vacations and days-off? How do you ensure that everbody is being treated equally fair? How can hospitals introduce rapid innovation for this process without interfering with the highly reliable but risk-averse internal organisation? PROCOMM has decided to tackle this challenge. We have built the next generation product that automates a large portion of this procedure, easing the lifes of management and employees in hospitals.

The Solution

The solution is a software-as-a-service platform that is easy to use and also easy to introduce for hospitals.

The platform allows staff to record their shift wishes, day-off wishes and vacation wishes. People responsible for planning can engage with the staff and automatically generate highly optimised shift plans with Artificial Intelligence and finalise those plans in a collaborative mode together with others.

The Result

The new product is currently under development and will be rolled out in two major hospitals in Switzerland in 2019. One of the hospitals is the UniversityHospital Zurich.
